A line carrying the flowable substance is connected to a controllable dispensing valve which is operated by a pressure medium to open or close the line. Complete closure and/or complete opening of the valve is achieved via an intermediate state in which the valve is partially open and the flow of substance through the valve is throttled. To close the valve, the flow of the substance is first throttled by applying a relatively small pressure of the pressure medium to the valve, before applying the full closing pressure to close the valve after a defined amount of substance has been dispensed.
