PURPOSE: A power-on downshift control apparatus of an automatic transmission and a method thereof are provided to improve shift quality by preventing shock in downshifting during traveling. CONSTITUTION: A downshift control device of an automatic transmission is composed of a downshift detecting unit(10) detecting downshift, and outputting an electrical signal; a turbine RPM(Revolution Per Minute)(20) detecting the turbine RPM, and outputting an electric signal according to turbine RPM; a transmission control unit(30) receiving an output signal from the downshift detecting unit, and outputting a hydraulic control signal to relieve shift shock in downshifting by receiving the signal from the turbine RPM detecting unit in downshifting; and a pressure control solenoid valve(40) operating according to the hydraulic control signal from the transmission control unit, and combining frictional factors in controlling shifting. Shift quality is improved with preventing shock in downshifting during traveling the automatic transmission vehicle.
