A process for the production of vicinal diols by oxidation of olefins with a peracid, formed in-situ from hydrogen peroxide and formic acid and/or acetic acid comprises addition of a saponification agent, optionally separation of the precipitated solid and distillation of the mixture in the presence of an organic solvent that forms an azeotrope. A process for the production of vicinal diols by oxidation of olefins with a peracid, formed in-situ from hydrogen peroxide and formic acid and/or acetic acid comprises: (A) mixing formic acid and/or acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide with olefins in a reactor to allow the olefins to react with the resulting peracid in the absence of additional organic solvent, to form a product mixture comprising a diol containing product phase (A1) and optionally a further aqueous formic acid and/or acetic acid containing phase (A2); (B) addition, optionally after separation of (A2) from (A1), of an organic solvent that forms a ternary azeotrope with water and formic acid and/or acetic acid; and distillation of the mixture to remove solvent, formic acid and/or acetic acid and water; (C) addition of a saponification agent; (D) optionally separation of the precipitated solid; and (E) distillation of the mixture in the presence of an organic solvent that forms an azeotrope with water in order to remove water from the mixture.
