The transmission has two spaced cones (42, 66) rotatable about a common axis and with a shift collar (34) interposed between them to rotate and slide along the axis to and from a neutral position. Two sets of pins (45, 46) respectively extend from the cone through a set of collar apertures. Neutral surfaces on the two pins engage with the engaging surfaces when the collar is in the neutral position. The pins are designed such that the engaging surfaces do not engage with the small diameter pin surfaces when the engaging surfaces engage the neutral surfaces. Independent claims are included for a method of shifting between a number of gears and a multispeed transmission with a synchronizer.
