PURPOSE: A method for operating a radio access network(RAN) connecting with different exchange stations in a mobile communication system is provided to automatically report whether an exchange station is an asynchronous transfer mode(ATM)-based exchange station when a different RAN is connected to the exchange station or one RAN is connected to a different exchange station, to process receiving/transmitting calls, so as to easily perform setting up/operating/compensating processes of the mobile communication system without a passive software package management of a system operator. The method is provided to make a radio network controller keep a determined call processing capacity, so as to raise a communication service quality. CONSTITUTION: If a call connection is requested from an optional node, a radio network controller checks whether an exchange station is an asynchronous transfer mode(ATM)-based exchange station. The exchange station converts a message form related to the requested call connection to transmit the converted message to a radio access network(RAN). The radio network controller processes the requested call connection according to the converted message.
