PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an electromagnetic wave amplifier for effecting electromagnetic wave amplification using both electrons in a vacuum and an electromagnetic wave exuding into the vacuum from a dielectric optical waveguide processed into a wavy form. SOLUTION: This is an electromagnetic wave amplifier comprising an electron radiating section 1, and an amplifying section 2 for unidirectionally amplifying an electromagnetic wave 12 inputted by utilizing energy received from an electron beam 4 which is radiated from the section 1 and which is thus travelling in a vacuum, the sections 1 and 2 being arranged in the vacuum. In this case, the section 1 includes a dielectric substrate 5 on which a dielectric waveguide 6 is formed in the direction in which the beam 4 travels, and electron beam converging electrodes 9 and 10 opposed to each other in a manner interposing the waveguide 6 therebetween. The waveguide 6 not only generates an electric field component E of the inputted wave 12 in the beam 4 travelling direction through part of the wave 12 crossing the beam 4 radiated from the section 1, but also is processed into a wavy form of a predetermined cycle length so as to reduce the speed at which the wave 12 travels in the beam 4 travelling direction. |
