PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple method for producing a tertiary carboxylic acid or its ester in high selectivity and simple reaction process. SOLUTION: This method for producing a tertiary carboxylic acid comprises carrying out the reaction of >=4C olefin or alcohol with carbon monoxide in the presence of a heteropolyacid silver salt and reacting the reaction product with water. The reaction with carbon monoxide is preferably carried out in the presence of the heteropolyacid silver salt and a strong acid catalyst and the reaction product is reacted with water. The heteropolyacid silver salt comprises at least a salt of a heteropolyacid selected from the group consisting of tungstophosphoric acid, molybdophosphoric acid, tungstosilicic acid and silicomolybdic acid. The strong acid is at least one kind of an acid selected from the group consisting of sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, hydrogen fluoride, boron trifluoride, water complex, boron trifluoride, ether complex, HPF6, methanesulfonic acid and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid. |
