The engine has at least one inlet valve (3,3',3'') per cylinder, whereby each inlet valve is actuated by a camshaft (2) and works in conjunction with an associated valve seat (9). The distance between the camshaft axis (N) and the valve seat for at least one inlet valve is greater than the distance for another inlet valve. The different distances between the camshaft axis and the valve seats are compensated for by hydraulic compensation elements (14) mounted between the inlet valves and the camshaft.
