METHOD FOR THE PREPARATION OF CARBONATED HYDROXYAPATITE COMPOSITIONS

A process for the preparation of a carbonate-substituted hydroxyapatite, which process comprises heating a hydroxyapatite having a Ca/P molar ratio greater than 1.67 but less than approximately 1.82 at a temperature of from 600 to 1200 DEG C in an atmosphere comprising CO2. This process enables a substantially single phase carbonate-substituted hydroxyapatite composition to be produced which does not contain sodium or ammonium ions.
