PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multicolor printer where all printing units can be installed to be equivalent and at the same time, the whole of the device can be made small. SOLUTION: In this device, a recording medium 3 is carried on a recording medium running path so that it is passed between 1st printing units 11, 21 and 2nd printing units 31, 41 from above or below, the recording medium that has passed between the 1st printing units and the 2nd printing units is carried to between image carriers 111, 211 and transfer means 116, 216 of the 1st printing units and the recording medium that has passed the image carriers and the transfer means of the 1st printing units has its carrying direction reversed and is carried to between image carriers 311, 411 and transfer means 316, 416 of the second printing units.
