PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of easily producing high purity vanadium oxyhydroxide hydrate from the combustion soot of fossil fuel, or the like, with a simple process, which vanadium oxyhydroxide hydrate is an important intermediate for producing tetravalent vanadium compound, and to provide the tetravalent vanadium with an inexpensive cost in comparison with the conventional process, by using the vanadium oxyhydroxide hydrate. SOLUTION: The method for producing the vanadium oxyhydroxide hydrate comprises (a) a process of allowing a reducing agent to act on the combustion soot in the suspended state in water of pH 1-3, which combustion soot is formed at the combustion of the fossil fuel, then filtering to remove insoluble residues and to obtain a solution containing tetravalent vanadium, (b) a process of adding ammonia or aqueous ammonia into the solution containing tetravalent vanadium to control the pH of the solution to 4.2-4.8 and depositing the vanadium oxyhydroxide hydrate, and (c) a process of filtering the deposited vanadium oxyhydroxide hydrate to obtain it.
