PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a polycarbonate having a high degree of polymerization and excellent quality and being economical because it can be produced by a process comprising few steps by subjecting an aromatic hydroxy compound, carbon monoxide, and oxygen to an oxidative carbonylation reaction to form an oligomer and increasing the molecular weight of the oligomer by a transesterification reaction. SOLUTION: It is desirable that the oligocarbonate is crystallized, and its molecular weight is increased by a transesterification reaction in a swollen or solid-phase state. The transesterification reaction may be performed in a molten state. The catalyst used in the oxidative carbonylation is desirably one comprising a palladium compound and a redox compound. The palladium compound used is exemplified by a polynuclear metal complex compound composed of a polynuclear metal compound and a plurality of palladium atoms incorporated therein. The aromatic hydroxy compound is desirably a bivalent hydroxy compound or a mixture thereof with a monohydric phenol.
