PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain high contrast. SOLUTION: A pair of glass substrates 1a, 1b are disposed at a prescribed distance, a chiral smectic liquid crystal 2 is disposed between a pair of glass substrates 1a, 1b, and a pair of electrodes 3a, 3b are disposed so as to interpose the chiral smectic liquid crystal 2. An element is controlled to satisfy the relationΘ10-Θ1<=4.0, whereΘ10 is the tilting angle of the chiral smectic liquid crystal 2 at a temp. lower than the upper limit temp. of the chiral smectic C-phase by 10 deg.C, andΘ1 is the tilting angle of the chiral smectic liquid crystal 2 at a temp. lower by 1 deg.C than the upper limit temp. of the chiral smectic C-phase. |
