A rivet is moved by a tool to press sheet steel material into a bottom die, while the die generates a lateral force pressing material against an outer rivet surface. The lateral force is generated via a fluid, which is introduced into the bottom die (8) and subjected to a high pressure. The fluid is applied after the rivet (3) has deformed the steel sheets (1,2) and is pressed into the bottom die chamber (9). The riveting machine has a riveting die (5) with pressure pad (7), and a bottom die with hollow chamber, which is sealed relative to its surroundings by a sealing strip (11) fitted into a groove (10) and engaging on one of the sheets. The chamber has a side intake (12) for the pressurized fluid.
