A flitch or lintel beam comprises in cross-section, a first timber beam component extending from one end to the other of the flitch beam. A second timber component extends from one end to the other of the flitch beam. A metal plate flitch greater than 3mm thick, is interposed between the timber beam components such the metal plate flitch is co-extensive with and is in contact with each of the timber beam components. A first set of nails is driven through the first timber beam component and through the metal plate flitch to extend into the second timber beam component. A second set of nails is driven through the second timber beam component and through the metal plate flitch to extend into the first timber beam component. Each nail of the nail sets has been driven to its final position under the action of a nail gun at sufficient speed to cause a heating effect between the nail and the metal plate.
