The fuel cell device has at least one fuel cell (10) with a polymer electrolyte membrane positioned between an anode and a cathode, supplied with a fuel gas containing hydrogen at the anode and with an oxidation gas at the cathode. The unreacted part of the fuel gas obtained from the fuel cell is fed to a combustion device (3) together with the oxidation gas, for combustion of the unreacted part of the fuel gas and the impurities in the oxidation gas, before the oxidation gas is fed to the fuel cell.
