An apparatus for in vivo imaging of ocular tissue comprises a laser beam (14) having a substantially planer configuration so as to illuminate an anterior portion of a patient's eye along a line of incidence (50) and cause the laser beam to be scattered by molecules in the corneal tissue. The scattered laser light is detected to form a cross-sectional image of the corneal tissue. Also disclosed is using retro-illumination (back-lighting) to image anterior ocular tissue, by reflecting red laser light from the retina and imaging the ocular tissue (such as the lens, cornea, or a contact lens) as the light passes back out of the eye; the use of green laser light allows for imaging blood vessels.
