The invention relates to a method for hydroxylating aromatics with peroxides using a catalyst and an inorganic membrane. The novel method improves conversions and selectivities for the hydroxylation of aromatics, especially benzene, with peroxides. By carrying out the inventive procedure using inorganic membranes, it is possible to achieve not only higher conversions and selectivities for the hydroxylation of benzene to phenol with hydrogen peroxide but also greater selectivity in relation to the peroxide. In addition, the unwanted decomposition of hydrogen peroxide to oxygen and water is reduced. The aromatic educt can also be oxidised with a higher ratio of peroxide to aromatic than was previously the case without losing selectivity. The inventive method can be used for oxidising benzene to phenol.
