PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a display device capable of arbitrarily changing its display color. SOLUTION: A transparent film 4 whose thickness is varied by applying voltage is held between a flat platelike transparent electrode 2 and a flat platelike reflecting electrode 3 to obtain the objective display element 1. The transparent film 4 is formed from a thin film of a piezoelectric material. The thickness of the transparent film 4 is varied owing to its piezoelectric property in accordance with voltage applied to the electrodes 2, 3 and visible light incident from the transparent electrode 2 side and reflected by the reflecting electrode 3 is colored by interference according to the thickness of the transparent film 4. The display color of the display element 1 can be arbitrarily changed by appropriately setting voltage applied to the electrodes 2, 3. Since phenomenon such as the seizing of a liquid crystal in a liquid crystal element is not caused in the display element 1, voltage applied to the electrodes 2, 3 may be DC voltage. |
