PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pulverized coal method, reduced in the generating amount of NOx or unburnt constituents remaining in the combustion ash of the pulverized coal, without increasing the height of a furnace. SOLUTION: Pulverized coal is burnt by a method wherein a burner, provided with a pulverized coal nozzle 10 for injecting the mixture of the pulverized coal and air as well as air nozzles 11, 12 for ejecting air, is provided to burn the pulverized coal while supplying an amount of air necessary for the complete combustion of the pulverized coal from the air nozzle 11. In such a pulverized coal combustion method, an amount of air, necessary for the complete combustion of the pulverized coal, is supplied from the air nozzle 11 while high- temperature flame is formed near the outlet port of the burner by igniting the pulverized coal quickly, then, oxygen is consumed rapidly whereby high- temperature reducing flame is formed while an oxidizing flame, having uniform distribution of gas composition in the radial direction with respect to the central axis of the burner, is formed by mixing air, injected from the air nozzle, at the downstream of the high-temperature reduced flame.
