PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow the rotary direction of a turret to continuously face the same direction when determining a stop position, and to accurately set the stop position of a penetrator or an objective lens by continuously controlling the rotary direction where a rotor is stopped at a specific stop position to the same direction. SOLUTION: A device body turret 11 is rotatably mounted to a hardness tester, and a penetrator 11a and objective lenses 11b and 11c are arranged at a specific position. A stop position detection mechanism detects a state where the penetrator 11a or the objective lenses 11b and 11c reach the specific stop position with the rotation of the turret 11. Also, a turret control mechanism controls the rotor according to the detection of the stop position by the stop position detection mechanism. Then, by the control of a rotor control mechanism, the rotor is driven and stopped by a turret driving mechanism. Then, from a recess being formed by pressing the penetrator 11a to the tester being placed on a sample rest by a hardness measurement part, the hardness of a test piece is measured.
