PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator that can utilize the hoistway space low in height with small cross section and access to a driving device securely and safely, when an elevator car has trouble above the hoistway. SOLUTION: An elevator car 10 is supported by at least one suspension rope 14 to be driven by a driving device 19. The driving device 19 contains a drive motor 21 and a rope sheave 20 driven by the drive motor 21. The suspension rope 14 passes through the rope sheave 20. The drive device 19 is positioned at the upper part of a hoistway 11 and is protruded at least above a part of the elevator car 10.
