PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve an air-fuel ratio control accuracy at the time of EGR control, and reduce harmful component in exhaust gas by setting a fuel injection volume according to a control target air-fuel ratio in a cylinder, an intake volume, and an injection mode, and controlling an EGR volume according to a deviation between the air-fuel ratio of exhaust gas and the exhaust target air-fuel ratio. SOLUTION: In an ECU 12 for inputting output signals of various kinds of sensors such as an intake volume sensor 2 and an air-fuel ratio sensor 6, an injection mode of a fuel injection valve 13 is switched to a compression stroke injection mode or and intake strike injection mode according to an operating condition. A target EGR volume is calculated according to the operating condition, and an EGR regulating valve 17 is controlled on the basis of a target EGR volume. An exhaust target air-fuel ratio in an exhaust pipe is calculated according to the operating condition, and a control target air-fuel ratio in the cylinder is calculated. A fuel injection volume of a fuel injection valve 13 is set according to the control target air-fuel ratio and the intake volume, and the injection mode, and the EGR regulating valve 17 is controlled according to a deviation between the air-fuel ratio in the exhaust pipe and the exhaust target air-fuel ratio.
