PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flat type light source which can ensure desired brightness without increase of discharge starting voltage and allow expansion of area. SOLUTION: A transparent front substrate 1 and a back substrate 2 are adhered to form a closed case. A phosphor 3 is applied to inside surface of the front substrate 1. A couple of electrodes 4, 5 are arranged on outer surface of the back substrate 2. A couple of recesses 6, 7 are formed on outer surface of the back substrate 2 where electrodes 4, 5 are neighbouring. Fine electrodes 8, 9 are arranged in the recesses 6, 7. Accordingly, expansion of area of a flat type light source can be allowed without increase in discharge starting voltage. Therefore, previously, the flat type light source, using no mercury, which can be only used for the light source for small devices can be applied for a large display screen such as car navigation system and use which must care about effect to environment.
