PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of an image display device capable of preventing degradation of members such as getter members without thermally damaging the members in forming a flat main body (vacuum vessel), and capable of stabilizing and imparting a long service life. SOLUTION: An outer frame 4 is placed in the gap between a rear plate 2 and a face plate 3 to seal and form a container 5. They are fixed by positional fixing jigs 45 at the prescribed positions to form a temporary fixing panel 46 (H). The panel 46 is set at the prescribed place in a heating device 53 (I). The temporary fixing panel 46 is placed between a lower heating body 52 and an upper heating body 49, in an atmosphere of argon gas, the central image display area is heated at low temperature, a temperature gradient which increases as it goes to the peripheral sealing part, and the peripheral are including the sealing part is heated at high temperature. Moving a movable part 43 in the direction of Z-axis, the face plate 3 is applied with a load and pressed to be sealed (J). Thereafter, it is cooled down to obtain the container 5 (K).
