PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for automatic shape inspection for a circular fluorescent lamp with a desirable quality determining reference. SOLUTION: In this inspection method, an image data of an annular fluorescent lamp 1 image-picked up by a CCD camera 3 is binalization-processed to calculate plural diameter data in the whole circumference using a base center and a lamp center of a dataed annular image as a reference, the quality of a shape of a circular fluorescent lamp is stepwisely determined by calculating selectively according to a predetermined calculational expression a discomfort index F indicating a parttial unevenness degree of a lamp shape, a lateral symmetry Q of a bulb shape around a base, and a roundness T of the whole lamp shape so as to compare the diameter data with thresholds TH1, TH2, TH3 set in a discomfort index F, the symmetry Q and the roundness T respectively as references for shape determination, and at least is determined finally by the discomfort index F.
