The support garment, and especially hosiery, is knitted with a base yarn and a stretch yarn to give a pressure of 10-37 hPa when measured at the level of the ankle. The stretch yarn (3) is knitted together with the base yarn (4) in simple jersey stitches with one row of stitches on two. The base yarn (4) is a multifilament with a thickness of <= 50 dtex. The stretch yarn (3) has a thickness, when stretched over the limb, of <= 50 dtex. The base yarn (4) is composed of <= 5 filaments or /-30 filaments such as 44 dtex with 34 filaments. The stretch yarn (3) is a covered yarn with twists of /-1000 twists/m during the mantle covering, and preferably. a double covering of /-2000 twists/m. The core of the stretch yarn is of elastane, with a mantle covering of 11 dtex and 7 filaments while it is stretched. The repeat of the stitch heights (H1,H2) at the thigh zone (A) is 0.2-0.3 for the height (H1) of the stitches (1) of one row (5) of stretch yarns (3) against the height (H2) of the stitches (2) in the adjacent row (6) of base yarns. The stitch height ratio H1:H2 at the calf zone is 0.5, and 0.75-1.0 at the ankle. The stitch (1) of stretch yarn (3) has the sides (1d,1e) on a diverging line from the stitch head (1c) to the feet (1a,1b) in the thigh zone (A), and in parallel in the calf zone.
