PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that emits a light from a light source onto a read face of an original, forms a reflected light from the original onto a read means so as to read an image on the original, and that effectively utilizes the light emitted from the light source radially so as to increase the luminous quantity emitted on the read face of the original and that can effectively obtain a reflected light from the image on the original formed on the read means. SOLUTION: The image reader is structured such that a light source 5 whose emitted light does not directly reach an original face is arranged opposite to reflecting plates 1a, 1b that collect the light emitted from the light source 5 and reflect the light to the read face of the original 7. The reflecting plates 1a, 1b that are formed to be ellipses whose foci are the light source 5 and the read face of the original 7. Furthermore, the reflecting plates 1a, 1b are placed so as to be opposite to each other with respect to an optical axis around which the reflected lights from the image on the original 7 are formed on the read means. Or the foci of the reflecting plates 1a, 1b may be positions deviated optionally toward the read face side or the light source side.
