PURPOSE: A method for playing video tapes of a video television is provided to vary the play speed of the video tapes at slow, normal and fast levels in order to increase efficiency. CONSTITUTION: A method for playing video tapes of a video television includes a first thru a seventh steps. At the first step(S100), video play mode is selected. At the second step(S110), normal speed is determined. At the third step(S130), the tape is played at the speed set, and auxiliary information is read. At the forth step(S140), language video tape is searched for number of playbacks. At the fifth step(S180), the speed of playback is determined according to the number of playbacks. At the sixth step(S230), the tape is played. At the seventh step(S280), the number of playback is increased by 1 and stored in the language tape.
