PURPOSE: Provided is a novel 3-alkoxy methylquinoline compound useful for the preparation of intermediates for pyridine- and quinoline-based herbicides. A method for preparing the same compound is also provided. CONSTITUTION: The compound, i.e., 3-alkoxy methylquinoline is represented by formula III, wherein R is a C1-C6 alkyl, R4 is H or a C1-C4 alkyl, and each of R5, R6 and R7 is H or OR4. The compound is prepared by the method comprising the step of reacting a compound of formula IV with at least an equimolar amount of a compound of formula I in the presence of an acid and solvent, and optionally in the presence of a compound of formula V.
