A gas-liquid contact column 10 has arranged within it a series of removable superposed packing elements, each element consisting of a plate 11 with a plurality of pockets or troughs 12 and with a flat rim surrounding the pockets or troughs and shaped so that the plate is a close fit in the column, each pocket or trough having at least one aperture 15 in a side wall to permit downward flow of liquid and upward flow of gas in the column. Preferably the pockets or troughs of one plate lie at rightangles to the pockets or troughs of adjacent plates and depressions may be formed in the lower apices of the pockets or troughs of a plate to locate the upper apices of the pockets or troughs of the plate below.
