A coated wire (1) is illuminated at different locations by optic fibres (14). Scattered light received by collecting chambers (4) is sensed by photo detectors (11) preferably connected in a differential arrangement to a computer (18). A difference signal is generated when a shade variation occurs in the colour of the coating, due to lack of concentricity between the wire and the coating.
