The invention relates to a method and a device for the treatment of excess pig iron, according to which the pig iron is cast in portions in moulds and after solidification and possibly intermediate storage is transferred to a remelting unit. To make it possible for said unit to be operated economically the invention provides for the liquid pig iron to be cast in moulds made of ingot moulds with extendable or movable mould walls from which after release of the solidified pig iron the pig iron ingot is removed by moving or extending said ingot mould walls.
