The arrangement has a sound signal line (1) extending along the path with predefined uniform sound propagation speed and a signal coupler on the movable object (2) coupled to a signal generator (5) for coupling a clocked sound signal into the signal line. Output couplers on the ends of the line are connected to counters connected to an evaluation unit (11) for determining the transition time difference and generating a position signal. A signal input coupler (4) couples in synchronization pulses with a clock time greater than the sound transition time from one end of the path of motion to the other and intermediate auxiliary pulses, whereby the synchronization pulses are marked with respect to the auxiliary pulses.
