4-haloalkyl-3-heterocyclylpyridines and 4-haloalkyl-5-heterocyclylpyrimidines of the general formula (I) are suitable for use as repellents against animal pests, notably insects, spider mites, ectoparasites and helminths. In the general formula (I) Q is a 5-atom heterocyclic group possibly substituted with halogen or organic rests, Y is halogen-C1-C6-alkyl, X is CH or N and m is 0 or 1.
