PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the display device which can widen an environmental illumination range for obtaining a screen of sufficient lightness by display using external light by using the external light and the illumination light from a light source with high efficiency, can reduce the power consumption of the light source by suppressing the luminance of the illumination light from the light source low, and can be made lightweight on the whole. SOLUTION: In front of the upper or lower edge side of a display panel 10 which has a reflecting plate 11 in the back, a rod type light source 13 which emit illumination light spreading over the entire screen of the display panel 10 toward its front is arranged along the lateral width direction of the screen of the display panel 10 to make a reflection display on the display panel 10 by reflecting the external light which is made incident from its front by the reflecting plate 11 and the reflection display by making the illumination light emitted by the rod type light source 13 on the front of the display panel 10, reflecting the illumination light by the reflecting plate 11, and projecting it to before the display panel 10.
