PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a chip extracting characteristic, a cutting characteristic and a crushing characteristic by providing multiple chip extracting faces divided over the whole periphery in a transition region, and adjacently forming chip extracting cutting edges on the chip extracting faces. SOLUTION: This cutting insert 1 is provided with a conical apex 2, a transition region 3 and a base section 4, and the peripheral face of the transition region 3 is formed with six chip extracting faces 5. The chip extracting faces 5 are adjacently provided while forming chip extracting cutting edges 6. The chip extracting faces 5 are inclined against the longitudinal axis of the cutting insert 1 at an acute angle. The nearly conical shape of the cutting insert 1 obtained by the inclination of the chip extracting faces 5 applies good stability to the cutting insert 1.
