[Also in Division H3] A klystron is tuned by means of a magneto-strictive element. As shown (Fig. 2) the body of the klystron is attached to a cooling flange 2 (Fig. 2) and the tuning element is connected to the end of a magneto-strictive rod 4. The bar is held at its other end by an adjusting screw 6a in a yoke 3 to which are fastened also magnetostrictive elements la, 16. The operation of these elements is in opposite sense to that of elements 4 and they are attached at their lower end to the cooling flange 2. Hence when a control field is applied to coil 2 the movement of the two types of rod is added to increase the tuning effect at the klystron. Screw 6 is used to set the mean klystron frequency and temperature variations should be arranged to cancel. In a further arrangement a pair of magneto-strictive bars are provided each with its own magnetizing coil 12, 14, Fig. 4, one moving the klystron mounting and the other the klystron tuner. A potentiometer 31 is adjusted by motor 30 responsive to frequency drift to unblock one of tubes rol, ro2 and block the other, thus energizing one of the coils to re-tune the klystron.
