PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily obtain a thin and light flat plate type image display device at a low cost. SOLUTION: This flat plate type image display device has a hermetic enclosure 206 produced by disposing a front surface substrate 201 and rear surface substrate 202 consisting of glass material opposite to each other and forming a hermetic space therebetween or this process is for production of such device. The front surface substrate 201 or the rear surface substrate 202 is provided with a strengthened region 218 intensified in the mechanical strength. The strengthened region 218 is the outside surface of the front surface substrate 201 or the rear surface substrate 202 or the entire surface or portion of the outside surface of the front surface substrate 201 and/or the rear surface substrate 202 and the strengthening is executed by wind cool strengthening or chemical strengthening.
