PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain improvement in work efficiency and reduction of the con sumption of the tool material per unit by improving the wear resistance and thermal cracking characteristics as those of a tool material for hot working. SOLUTION: The components composed of, by weight, 1.0 to 2.5% C, 0.3 to 2.0% Si, 0.1 to 2.0% Mn, 3.0 to 10.0% Cr, <=6.0% Mo, <=6.0% W, 4.0 to 15.0% V, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities are incorporated with one or more kinds of Ti and Zr, by 0.01 to 1.0% are added with at least one or more kinds among Mg, Ca and Ce by 0.001 to 0.2% and, are, if required, moreover added with a trace amt. of B, by which the grain-refining of carbides is made possible, and a tool material for hot working excellent in wear resistance and thermal cracking resistance can be produced.
