PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the product costs by diversion by mounting a check valve with an orifice in a piston nut. SOLUTION: In a hydraulic shock absorber having a bypass passage bypassing an extension side damping valve 3 arranged in a piston 2 in a piston rod 4, an extension side check valve 9 facing the opening on the side of a pressure side oil chamber R2 is provided in a piston nut 8 which is screwed in the lower end part of the piston rod 4 to fix the extension side damping valve 3. An orifice 9a formed in the extension side check valve 9 is set in the bypass so that its diameter is smaller than that of through hole 5a (5b) for making the bypass a connected state.
