PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for concealing errors is provided to prevent image quality degradation by using spatial and temporal correlation in adjacent blocks lost at a receiving unit with respect to errors generated on a channel. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for concealing errors having a control unit(1), memory(5), and display unit includes: a transport stream decoding unit(2) for decoding a bit stream according to a control signal of the control unit(1); a variable length decoder(3) for decoding the transport stream decoded by the transport stream decoding unit(2) to a variable length and thereafter outputting the same with an error flag attached thereto when an error has occurred; a video decoder(4) for decoding the signal decoded by the variable length decoder(3) to a video signal, storing the video signal in the memory(5), and thereafter displaying the same by the display unit; and an error concealing unit(6) for concealing and compensating errors according to the error flag of the variable length decoder(3). A method for concealing errors by which lost blocks are restored comprises the steps of: discriminating temporal and spatial correlation with the preceding frame by applying a cost function and estimating that the vector having the smallest error among available motion vectors is an initial vector; detecting an optimized motion vector in a seek area using the estimated initial vector; and replacing lost blocks by the blocks in the preceding frame using the optimized motion vector. |
