A tool preform is made by clamping together a set of vertical columns and machining the working surface at the free ends of the columns to give a first tool (1') with a profile (10'). A second tool, which has localized profile differences, is made by machining new columns (21-24) to a different profile which can be easily exchanged with corresponding columns having the first tool profile.
