Velocity of relative motion between the energy transfer field and the surface to be melted is kept constant. Re-melt hardening of curved surfaces by means of a two-dimensionally deflected energy transfer field, in particular, an electron beam comprises: (a) relative motion at a constant velocity takes place between the energy transfer field and the workpiece surface to be melted, as a result of variable deflection of the energy transfer field; (b) at any point of the curved workpiece surface, the energy transfer field is oriented perpendicular to the tangent at this point; (c) the energy transfer field on the workpiece surface is controlled in such a way that on its path - which is oriented across the direction of the workpiece motion - the energy input into the workpiece surface on the leading side (with respect to the workpiece motion) of the path is greater than on the trailing side.
