PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize distortion caused by strength and deflection of a shadow mask having a curved surface corresponding to the inside surface of a panel, by specifying the thickness of a long side perpendicularly intersecting a vertical axis, a short side perpendicularly intersecting a horizontal axis and the center part of the panel, as for the thickness in the diagonal line direction of the panel having a flat outside surface and an inside surface with a fixed curvature. SOLUTION: The long side 12 and the short side 14 of s panel 8 for a cathode ray tube perpendicularly intersect a vertical axis V1 and a horizontal axis H1, and its diagonal line D1 intersects the intersection of the long side and the short side. The thickness Tv of the long side 12 intersecting the vertical axis V1 and the thickness Th of the short side 14 intersecting the horizontal axis H1 satisfy a relation of 0.75<=(Th-Tc)/(Td-Tc)<=0.85 and another relation of 0.75<=(Tv-Tc)/(Td-Tc)<=0.85. Since the outside surface of this panel is formed flat to reproduce an idealistic picture image and the inside surface is rounded, a shadow mask having a corresponding shape can be adopted.
