The drive mechanism is used for opening and closing especially a garage door. It incorporates a drive motor (10) with an output shaft (12) whose end (14) has a large number of fine splines. The splines on the drive shaft fit fine internal teeth (18) inside a cup-shaped adaptor (16) which has coarse splines (20) on the outside. The coarse splines fit internal teeth (26) in a bore (20) in the hub of a drive wheel (22).
