The banknote can be made of paper, like normal notes, or of plastic. The component in the banknote is made of material for electromagnetic, electronic or optical storage of information. It can also be a micro-processor. Before the banknotes are delivered from the bank and used for payment purposes, their nominal value is transferred from the bank account to the magnetic strips in them. This activates the notes. On each payment to a bank, shop or similar the notes are deactivated and the note values are moved electronically from them to the bank or shop account. Activation and deactivation occurs with the aid of electronic equipment which is used for customary credit cards. |
