A safety syringe, with a tapering split connector on the piston leading end for connection to a needle holder, is new. A safety syringe has a connection element which is raised above the leading end abutment of a piston and which connects with a needle holder to allow retraction of the needle holder and a needle unit by the piston into the cylinder interior. The connection element comprises a split head which is joined by a neck to the piston abutment and which has a diameter decreasing towards its leading end, the leading end cross-section and the rear end cross-section being respectively smaller and greater than the diameter of the rear connection opening of the needle holder.
