To maintain an equal contact pressure over the whole contact length of a pair of rollers 1, 2, the roller 2 is formed as a flexible cylindrical jacket 3, supported only at its centre by a web 5 on a shaft 4, the jacket 3 of the roller 2 flexibing under the contact pressure independently of its supporting shaft 4 to conform to the shape of the other roller 1. The jacket 3 is provided with stiffening rings 6 which maintain the circular section under the action of the contact pressure, the rings 6 being arranged to clear the shaft 4 under deformation of the jacket. The bending strength of the jacket is about 0À6 times that of the roller 1. |
