PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simplify the whole mechanism in a recording medium driving mechanism for recording/reproducing two kinds of media (e.g. CD and MD) with a common optical pickup, by making the transfer direction of the optical pickup to the same against both of the media. SOLUTION: The optical pickup 11 is mounted on a main chassis 2, and the transfer direction is set in the oblique direction of nearly 45 deg. against the side surface of a frame 1. A sub-chassis 3 is ascendably/descendably arranged at the upside of the main chassis 2, and a holder 27 is rotatably supported on the lower surface of the sub-chassis 3. In the case of CD, it is transported to the play position by a driving roller 25, then the optical pickup 11 is transferred to the oblique direction of nearly 45 deg. at this play position. In the case of MD 7, the holder 27 is rotated by nearly 45 deg. by taking a driving motor 32 as the driving source after the MD 7 is transported to the prescribed position in the holder 27. By this procedure, since the transfer direction of the optical pickup 11 and the longitudinal direction of a window hole 7c exposing the magneto-optical disk 7a of the MD 7 are coincident, the optical pickup 11 is transferred to the radial direction of the magneto-optical disk 7a.
